Chile Prende, national call of the G100 of ASECH, already has 100 semifinalists. Over 1000 micro entrepreneurs from all over the country uploaded a 1 minute video to social networks to participate for the economic awards and to receive mentoring. Having the support of a mentor, an experienced businesswoman who shares her experience, seems to be as attractive, or even more so than receiving financial support. Chilean ventures are increasingly open to angel investors, characterized by the support of ventures beyond money. The angel investors open their networks to entrepreneurs, share their successes and also their failures and accompanies the entrepreneur in the process of personal and professional growth. The advantages for the mentee seem obvious, but what is a good mentor, and what are the benefits for the mentor?
Mats Lederhauser founder of Because, a platform that builds and invests in businesses that have a purpose beyond their products, suggests 5 fundamental questions to establish the main points that will be worked on in successful mentoring.
What do you really want to be and do? This question is about the person’s aspiration and purpose. Since the road to successful entrepreneurship is long and difficult, passion combined with skills in a certain field is vital to reinvent yourself continuously and not give up half way through.
What do you really know how to do that takes you where you want to be? Based on the natural strengths of the entrepreneur such as leading people, analyzing data or developing artificial intelligence programs, the areas of successful entrepreneurship and the needs of complementary talents that should be incorporated into the entrepreneurial team are identified.
What prevents you from reaching your goal? In order to scale your venture, it is important to detect the obstacles: maybe there is a lack of teamwork, perhaps technical knowledge is missing, or perhaps you will not dare to implement the first client. Self-imposed obstacles are often detected during mentoring, but there are also ways to solve real obstacles.
What are you going to do differently starting tomorrow? This is the most crucial question for the mentorship to be successful, as it measures the willingness to change. Any mentee who wants to make the most of the mentoring process will have to make changes at the personal and professional level, as a team or in their business model. To achieve different results you have to try different ways.
How can I help you? This is the key question to establish a relationship of mentoring that is based on detecting opportunities for improvement of the entrepreneur and their entrepreneurship. It is ideal for a long-term relationship that is not after business connection with a specific client, but deep work to escalate the endeavor to the next level.
When mentors are asked about what they take of mentoring, different topics appear, such as: learning new technologies and different areas of business outside their fields, the feeling of satisfaction for returning the favor and making a difference in life of the entrepreneur and his entrepreneurship. Hopefully there are more and more people who dare to be mentors, to be able to experience these benefits and, at the same time, impact the Chilean entrepreneurial ecosystem.
